Greeting

Research on language typology and language universals is dealing with the question of linguistic variance and invariance. It tries to understand to what extent linguistic structures can be different and where they show common features. This is the fascinating topic to be presented at this Summer School in Mainz in as broad a way as possible, from a functional perspective as well as from a formal perspective.
It is a great pleasure to me to introduce linguistic typology with excellent lecturers and guest speakers with international reputation in Mainz on behalf of the German Linguistic Society. Linguistic typology can be studied at the University of Mainz since 1992 under the title of Comparative Linguistics. Due to the fact that Mainz is situated at a central point in the Rhein-Main area it has become a melting pot of many different cultures which offer a vast number of opportunities to study other types of variance and invariance beyond linguistics. Friends of wine will also have the chance to study the variance and invariance of the rich varieties of wines produced in Rheinland-Pfalz.
In this sense, I am looking forward to seeing you at the 6th Summer School of the German Linguistic Society in Mainz.

Walter Bisang
