Public transportation from Frankfurt Airport to the University of Mainz
In order to use the automatic ticket vending machines, you need either small
bills (5 EUR or 10 Eur, respectively) or coins (0,10 EUR, 0,20 EUR, 0,50 EUR, 1
EUR, 2 EUR).
Take stairs or elevator to the underground floor of the airport. Follow the
signs to the train (S-Bahn). Close to the stairs that lead to
the train tracks there are several blue ticket vending machines. For a ticket
to Mainz type the code number 65, then press the button next
to the red field "Einzelfahrt", then type in
"1" (for direct route), and then pay the amount shown (the
machines return change).
It is illegal to enter an "S-Bahn" without such tickets (if the conductor finds
you he can charge you 30 EUR for travelling without ticket)
As Frankfurt airport got 2 railway stations now, trains to
Mainz Hbf. either leave from the regional (local) station or
from the long distance station at the AirRail terminal. The
S-Bahn S8, RE trains and RB trains leave from the regional
station.
Non-stop trains (IC-/EC- or ICE-trains leave from the long-distance station
(track 6 and 7). Tickets can be bought at "DB" vending machines, counters and
the travel agency (ground floor of the airport).
While these fast trains
go to Mainz non-stop, the regional trains have many stops. The stop to
get off is Mainz Hbf (=Hauptbahnhof: main railway station), the
second stop after crossing the river Rhine (do not get off at
"Mainz Süd")
From the railway station Mainz Hbf (=Hauptbahnhof: main
railway station) to the Institute of Physics you get with a short and
inexpensive taxi ride, or by buses number 54 (destination
Lerchenberg/Bruckner Str.), 55 (destination
Finthen/Theodor-Heuss-Str.),58 (destination
Wackernheim/Rathausplatz), or 68 (destination
Klein-Winternheim.). You can buy the bus ticket from the driver (outside the
rush our ask for a "Kurzstrecke" ticket which is cheaper then
a regular ticket.
Get off at the 3rd stop (Friedrich-v.-Pfeiffer-Weg). From
there you cross the bridge over the big road to enter the university campus.
From there it is an 8 minute walk to the conference site (see campus map ).
