While this upgrade of cluster processor and jet/energy processor will actually take place at an early stage of phase 1, the current cluster and jet processors will later on be complemented by new processors operating at higher granularity. These processors will be added in the following long shutdown.

The electromagnetic calorimeters will at this stage start providing high granularity data on optical fibres, specifically for trigger purposes. This will allow for improved cluster and jet finding algorithms, very similar to the current algorithms, though at higher granularity. The new processors will consist of a Digital Preprocessor and two Feature Extractors, for electromagnetic clusters and jets, respectively.

Cluster and jet candidates from the feature extractors will be reported to the topological trigger processor.
