- Mistkäfer (Scarabaeoidea
und Hydrophilidae) als Bioindikatoren für die naturschützerische
Bewertung von Weidebiotopen
Thomas Waßmer
Abstract: Being dependent on dung as food and breeding resources,
dung beetles proove to be extremely valuable bioindicators for an evaluation
of pasture biotops in nature conservation and management. A case study
on the most abundant dung beetle community regarding species numbers described
in Europe so far, in the Kaiserstuhl area near Freiburg (SW-Germany).
Summary: In an all-year-round survey of coprophagous beetles
in a pasture in the Kaiserstuhl area (SW-Germany), cow pats and sheep lumps
were gathered from two open fields and one wooded area twice a month. 40,298
beetles belonging to 38 species of Scarabaeoidea and 14 of Hydrophilidae,
were detected. The small site on the Kaiserstuhl has the highest species
diversity in Scarabaeoidea species of all local dung beetle coenoses described
in Europe so far. The biogeographic composition showed 16 Cosmopolitan,
Holarctic, Palaearctic and Eurosiberian species; 11 northern Palaearctic
and northern European species; 15 nouthern Palaearctic, southern Siberian,
southern European and Mediterranean species; and 10 European species.
The high number in species of dung beetles, the occurence of some otherwise
rare or extincted species in quite high numbers, as well as the biogeographic
composition of the species community seen in relation to other pasture
areas all over Europe, indicates statements on the natural history of settlement
as well as on the history of agriculture and shifting of agricultural techniques.
Furthermore due to these facts it is possible to evaluate the importance
of pasture areas in nature conservation and elaborating concepts for a
useful cultivation and management of such biotops.
