Scientific work and interests

This page shows my scientific work and my scientific interests. I give some short descriptions of my PhD-Project. The Project is called VERIPREG (VERIfication of PREcipitation over Germany) and is part of the priority Program Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (SPP-1167) of the German Science Fundation (DFG). For my investigations I use the previously developed quality measure SAL to assess the quality and shortcommings of QPF from different numerical weather prediction models. You will find inforamtion about my results in the List of Publications.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions concerning my work or my publications, don't hesitate to contact me.

Brief Description PhD- Position

The following goals will be addressed during the 3rd phase of VERIPREG. Some of the goals have a strong technical component (T1-T3), and are prerequisite for the investigation of the other key scientific objectives of the 3rd phase of the project (S1-S4):

T1) Extension of SAL (time dimension): The implementation of the quality measure SAL will be extended to allow for a fuzzy representation of temporal forecast errors. This will be essential for a more complete consideration of hourly QPFs from high-resolution models.
T2) New weather-type classification: A new empiric weather type classification will be developed, based upon ECMWF analysis data. The classification should be applicable to predefined regions (e.g. the COPS area or a river catchment) and o c u s on few categories that are particularly meaningful for the study of precipitation systems (e.g., pre-frontal, frontal, stagnant air mass).
T3) 9-year climatology of precipitation over Germany: Temporal extension of the disaggregated hourly precipitation data set for the 9-year time period 2001-2009, and refined statistical evaluation (geographical distribution of diurnal cycle, precipitation frequency distributions, etc.).

S1) Comparison of QPF performance of MAP D-PHASE models: Application of SAL to assess and intercompare the QPF performance in the German part of the COPS area of all models that have been operational during MAP D-PHASE (summer and autumn 2007). More information about MAP D-PHASE and COPS.
S2) Long-term evaluation of QPF performance of COSMO models in Germany: Application of SAL to investigate the quality of QPFs from COSMO models in different regions of Germany during time periods of up to 9 years (T3). Comparison of model versions with different boundary conditions and horizontal resolutions.
S3) Relationship between QPF performance and meteorological conditions investigation of the meteorological conditions that are associated with particularly large/small COSMO models QPF errors in different catchments. Investigation of QPF performance for different weather types. Special focus on intense convective events.
S4) Contribution to the international project spatial forecast verification method intercomparison (SVFM-ICP): Application of SAL to predefined test cases in different regions of the globe. Intercomparison of verification results obtained with SAL with other newly developed verification techniques.
